The reason the song is thought to be inappropriate is because it was actually sung after the wedding right before when Lohengrin and Elsa were going to go consumate their marriage.It is also thought to be inappropriate due to the failure of Elsa and Lohengrin's marriage. (I know this since I'm a music major who paid attention in class.) The couple who marries in the opera were Elsa (female) and Lohengrin (male).
